EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
