Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
