No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
